I get very passionate about this topic friends, it is one of the main reasons I am in this line of work. There have been so many incidents/accidents in the workforce this past year, as well as the past decade of my working in the Occupational Health and Safety industry. I was truly hoping that this year I would see a sharp decrease, at least in fatalities.

Sadly, not so; this year there was another young man, barely into his teens that lost his life in our city while working at his first summer job. He was just one among many others in North America that lost his life in a job related fatality. He left for work that morning saying goodbye to his mom, "see you after work" and never came back to her that night. Each day I read or hear first hand, the horrifying stories of how these tragedies have left someone disabled. Even worst devastating, one of my staff or I have called a client and someone on the other end tells us “They were killed last week.” Imagine our shock and horror - Imagine their families, their sadness and devastation.

For this reason, among many, I was so very proud that the company I have worked with for over a decade decided for their 20th Anniversary Celebration, we would give back to our clients and the community youth. We would ask our clients what it is that they wanted to see or had questions about in the future of safety. We sent out invitations to post them over a three month period - they poured in volumes of quality questions to our website.

We lined up a world-class team of Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to answer the questions over our website. Our Facilitator, worked diligently with the Subject Matter Experts to compile and review the questions. In order to publish these into a smaller styled condensed version book, we took the most popular of the questions and published the thoughts of 21 prominent experts in all workplace safety disciplines and professions, drawn from across the nation …and in their own words laid out the "Future of Safety".

We published these questions and replies of nation wide SMEs, in a book that is now for sale with all profits going to two safety related charities. The publication “The Future of Safety" is now available on our website http://www.hatscan.com

Profits will go to:

SMARTRISK helps people see the risks in their everyday lives and shows them how to take those risks in the smartest way possible so that they can enjoy life to the fullest.
And
Job Safety Skills Society (JSSS): Educating youth about workplace safety is the key to prevention.

This is a “can’t-do-without” resource for Safety professionals, managers, regulators and persons in all occupations that impact workplace health and Safety. Here are the thoughts of 21 prominent experts from all workplace Safety disciplines and professions, drawn from across the nation … in their own words. all profits go to charity!

Maxine, great idea.
When I was 20 I used to handle chemicals without gloves, use electric power tools, saws, without any protection. Nothing bad happened and I kept taking risks until I had a small warning call : skin reaction as it had been in contact with epoxy resin. Since then I'm very "safety first". Accidents are always so stupid.
There's always a risk, the least we can do is minimise it. Your eyes, your hands, your body are precious.
Be safe

Thanks for sharing this Seb.

I'm really pleased to read that you always practice safe work habits now. Being a sculptor, I can understand how you would have many times while working that could be dangerous to your health; with all the various chemicals you use and power tools-Ahh! I never thought of these, but yes, you also mentioned that you have started welding in your processes too, you would require a lot more than just the regular PPE, but the proper welding PPE.

Seb, I only know too well, first hand, what not having Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) on can lead to. When I was much younger, my dad inhaled liquid chlorine gas when working in the water treatment plant where we lived. He only removed his mask for a second....He spent 2 weeks in hospital, had a horrible quality of life after that and eventually passed away from lung cancer.

I agree, our bodies are precious and we must look after them.
Stay safe and well,
Maxine
